How to Look After Your Air Compressor: Repair and Maintenance Tips

Your industrial air compressor is a significant investment and a major contributor to operating efficiently and productively. Ensuring that your air compressor or air treatment equipment is kept in good condition should mean that it is high on your list of maintenance jobs.

Luckily, these industrial machines do not require a huge amount of time consuming resources to keep performing throughout the year. However, performing a few routine checks, tests, cleaning and adjustments will go a long way toward keeping your air compressor in the best condition and prevent unnecessary downtime for your business.

In this guide, we’ll take a look at the importance of air compressor maintenance and the steps you should follow to keep it in good working order.

Why is air compressor maintenance and repair important?

With an efficient maintenance plan, your compressed air system will last for years to come and provide you with thousands of hours of operation. Your business production will also remain at the highest standard which is particularly important in environments where contamination can be a problem.

There are a number of air compressor checks that need to be carried out before each operation. Occasionally, you might find a previously unknown issue when you perform a thorough check or a diagnostic review after the compressor has rested for a period of time.

Proper maintenance will help you to spot any issues before they become more costly or cause the air compressor to break down. It will also ensure that your compressor is as efficient as possible and the air quality is still high.

Make sure you remember everything you need to do with a checklist, and prior to carrying out maintenance ensure that you always consult the owner’s manual for the recommended schedule.

Step 1: Consult Your Air Compressor’s Manual

Nothing stops compressed air equipment faster than when an individual doesn’t read the owner’s manual. There’s going to be a few simple tips in there for you that will help you to get a very long life out of your air compressor – simple measures for you to do that you would need to have thought to do unless you read it. Moreover, if you don’t adhere to the advice in your air compressor manual there’s a chance that you’ll void your warranty. That in itself should be enough of an incentive to make sure you go through the manual.

Step 2: Drain The Moisture From The Tanks

The receiver tank collects moisture from the air that it’s compressing – especially if you live in a humid climate. Most tanks have a valve for draining this moisture that accumulates and it’s up to you to make sure that these are drained regularly. Before draining the water you should be sure to release the air pressure from the tanks.

Step 3: Clear the Intake Vents

If you are forcing your air compressor to work too hard to intake air you’re going to lose power on your compression. This will gradually lower the quality of your equipment. Be sure to keep your intake vent as clear as you can and check them often especially if you’re working in a dusty workshop or an environment which gets unclean easily.

Step 4: Tighten the Fasteners

Your air compressor is running, vibrating engine and will loosen its screws, nuts and bolts on a frequent basis. Ensure that you check these periodically and tighten them up if you are unable to find any that have come loose.

Step 5: Check the Hoses often

Have a look at the hoses periodically as they are the bare bones of your air compressor. If they become cracked or corroded they may soon begin to leak and then put significant strain on the rest of your compressor’s components. Make sure to check them and replace them if you find them cracked or damaged.

Step 6: Test the Safety Shutdown Systems

Your air compressor may have a built-in safety shut down. The function of this system is to shut off your compressor if it’s too hot, or if the engine’s oil pressure is turned down too low. This will help you ensure a longer-lasting compressor.

Step 7: Check and Change Air Filters As Required

An unclean air filter is only damaging your air compressor by enabling dirt from the outside in causing it to build up and making it more difficult for the machine to take air in. Have a look at your filters regularly and change them if you notice a significant build-up of dust and dirt. Change this six months or so if you use it less regularly.

Step 8: Clear out the Fuel Tank

As with any engine, you’ll have to periodically clear out the fuel tank to provide optimal operating conditions. Try to clean out the engine on your air compressor once every year or so to remove any residual build up. This will help to preserve the life of your air compressor.

Step 9: Check and Change the Compressor Oil

If you’re in possession of a compressor that uses oil, you need to be checking it on a regular basis to make sure that your machine is topped off. Then, every 500-1000 hours of it being used, you should be changing the oil to make sure maximum functioning of your air compressor.

Step 10: Change the Separator Element

The oil separator element stops the excessive use of oil, but it needs to be replaced periodically. Keep your compressor in good condition by replacing the separator element every 1,000 hours of operation.

Step 11: Clean the Heat Exchangers

If your heat exchangers are unclean, they can’t work efficiently and do their job, which is going to reduce the operating temperatures of your air compressor. Clean them often to keep operating temperatures down and increase the lifespan of your air compressor.

Adhering to the above tips will help you to make sure that your air compressor live a long and full life and continues to serve its purpose within your business. It will also perform more efficiently.
