Buying an air compressor can be a significant investment for any business so choosing a compressed air dryer for your system will help to protect your investment and ensure that your air compressor continues to work effectively throughout its lifetime. Air compressors are used across a wide range of industrial applications where air quality is essential.  If you have a compressed air system within your business, managing the air quality and moisture within the system is essential. Failing to take this into consideration can lead to problems with condensation and water within the system which can affect the overall operation of the system and affect your business’s bottom line.  Allowing moisture into the system can cause damage to both the system and the tools being powered with the compressed air. Some applications need drier air than others so selecting the right compressed air dryer will be important to ensure the longevity of your air compressor, the system and the tools being used.  Compressed air dryers are designed to remove water and moisture from the compression process and will ensure that moisture is removed under all conditions, at any time of the year to protect your equipment, providing high quality air for your applications.  There are a number of different types of compressed air dryer available and being aware of the options can help you to choose the right one.

Why choose a compressed air dryer?

There are a number of key reasons to opt for a compressed air dryer:
  • Ensure safe operation - keep your system damage free, long-lasting and enjoy long term results from your air compressor.
  • High quality end product - air dryers ensure that the air used in the end product is pure and dry to protect both equipment and production.
  • Save costs - if your air compressor becomes damaged, it will need maintenance which can cost and it will also slow down production.

FAQs for used air dryers

What is an air dryer?

An air dryer is a device designed to remove water vapour from compressed air. During compression, air naturally becomes saturated with moisture, which condenses as it cools. If this moisture remains in the system, it can cause corrosion and internal damage. It can also reduce the efficiency and lifespan of the equipment. That’s why an air dryer is crucial for removing moisture present during the compression process.

How does an air compressor dryer work?

Once the air has been compressed, it moves into the air dryer. During this process, moisture is generated during compression.   During drying, moisture is removed from compressed air. This is carried out by cooling the air so that water vapour condenses into liquid water. The air and water are then separated. Alternatively, the compressor features a desiccant material that naturally absorbs moisture from the air. Once the water is removed, it’s safely drained away. Due to the lack of moisture contamination, pneumatic equipment is protected against rust and corrosion. There should also be a notable improvement in compressor performance.

Why buy a used air dryer?

Buying a used air dryer is a smart choice if you require reliable moisture removal from compressed air - without the huge investment. New compressor dryers are pricier, particularly in larger industrial setups. However, a second-hand dryer often offers a more affordable way to achieve the same outcome.   Also, the lead times are much shorter when purchasing a used model than for a new one. However, it’s important to do your research before making your decision. Always check service history, condition, and compatibility with your compressor system to avoid breakdowns and other issues down the line.

What are the different types of air compressor dryers?

There are several different types of air compressor dryers:

Refrigerated air dryers

Refrigerated air dryers are the most common type on the market. They work by cooling the compressed air to roughly 3°C. This then causes moisture in the air to drop out of suspension before condensing into liquid. This liquid is then separated from the air and drained from the system before moving on to the next stage.

Desiccant air dryers

Desiccant air dryers work by drawing water vapour from compressed air. It is a desiccant bead that absorbs moisture and holds it. Because of this, they can produce much drier air than refrigerated systems, reaching dew points below -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Thanks to their super-purified, clean air, they’re commonly used in environments where moisture is non-negotiable, such as pharmaceutical and food-processing environments.
