Four Signs Your Air Compressor Needs Repair

Air compressors are a vital piece of equipment for many industries, including construction, agriculture and manufacturing. Every business wants to make sure they’re functioning as efficiently as possible, but a faulty or broken air compressor can cause many issues, including production delays, money losses or even danger to your employees.

It’s important to be able to recognise faults as soon as possible. Knowing when compressor repair is required can help save money by repairing the compressor before it becomes unusable and so badly damaged that it halts production.

If you work with air compressors and want to prevent serious repair costs further down the line, see below for our experts’ four warning signs that your air compressor needs repair.

Excess moisture

Compressed air produces condensation; it’s part of the process. But if you’ve noticed a build up of moisture at the point of use, this suggests a problem with moisture quality. If you spot any rust, this is also a sign of moisture damage.

If you have a manual drain, you may just need to clear it daily. But if your drain is automatic and you’ve noticed excess moisture, then you may have a faulty system.

Moisture problems will only get worse, so it’s important to take them seriously and look into compressor repairs as soon as possible.

Low air pressure

This is one of the most common issues affecting air compressors. Low air pressure often means the compressor can’t be used to its full potential. This could be caused by faulty controls or internal wear and tear in the system. Whatever the reason, low pressure is not ideal in industrial environments because demand will be difficult to meet.

Low pressure indicates a decline in air quality. It’s good to have this checked and the relevant features repaired if necessary.

Thermal overload

Compressors are designed to manage temperature fluctuations. If your compressor experiences frequent thermal shutdowns or long cooling periods between cycles, it’s a good idea to check your ventilation.

First, try cleaning the coolers of your air compressor to see if it makes a difference; if not, it will need to be serviced by an experienced technician as these issues are signs of declining system performance.

Unusual noises

Industrial oil-injected compressors can make a lot of noise, but it should be one recognisable noise at a consistent volume. You can tell if something is amiss with the compressor if it suddenly becomes much louder. There may be an issue with the motor or compressor.

Screeching, rattling or banging sounds also suggest a loose or broken piece of machinery. If, at any time, your compressor sounds different to usual, take it as a sign to get maintenance to investigate.
