How To Choose The Right Air Compressor For Hire

An air compressor is a vital tool to have in any sort of workshop or garage, whether it’s at home or for work. Their versatility is unmatched, powering an extensive range of pneumatic tools such as paint sprayers, nail guns and sanders, as well as everyday items such as pressure washers and refrigerators.

When it comes to choosing which is the right fit for your needs, there’s a lot to consider. Not only are there a variety of air compressor types to hire, but they also have unique features and benefits. Some air compressors are suitable for a range of tasks, whereas others are designed for specific purposes.

This guide will outline the different types of air compressors, their functions and aim to help you choose the best air compressor to hire for your needs! Let’s get into it…

What is an air compressor?

An air compressor is a machine that uses compressed air to power a range of tools and appliances. These can range from nail guns and pressure washing to inflating tyres and even powering refrigerators and air conditioning units. So, when choosing a compressor, it’s important to find one that will work with the pneumatic tool or appliance you require!

How does it work?

Air is drawn into the compressor, and then is forced into a smaller space which increases the pressure. This compressed air is stored in a tank.

When you need to use the air, you open a valve which releases the compressed air from the tank. The air flows through a hose to power your tools or equipment.

As you use the air, the compressor will continue to draw more air in, compress it, and store it again. You don’t ever have to worry about running out of energy as there’s a constant supply of pressurised air.

Different types of air compressors

There are two categories that all air compressors fall into.

Positive displacement compressors

Listed below, these types of air compressors work by drawing in air, and then reducing the volume of where the air is being stored. This creates pressure which can be used for tools etc.

Reciprocating (or piston) compressors

With the clue in the name, this compressor uses a piston or valve to adjust the tank’s pressure. If you require a range of pressures, this option is a great choice. However, they are not designed for continuous use.

Rotary screw compressors

These are a popular choice and are used in industrial settings and construction sites. They’re designed for continuous use but achieve a smaller PSI range than piston compressors. They are an efficient and low-maintenance choice.

Rotary vane compressors

Often used for tyre inflation, and therefore ideal for automotive applications, rotary vane compressors are great for pneumatic tools, including drills and wrenches. Although they are not limited to this sector, they’re also used in dental surgeries and body shops. This air compressor uses rotating vanes in a rotor to compress air, and is reliable and efficient as a result!

Scroll compressors

Scroll compressors are often used in residential and commercial buildings. For example, within air conditioning units, refrigerators, and heat pump applications.

Dynamic compressors

These types of air compressors work by generating kinetic energy (by accelerating blades or impellers) to speed up the air. When the air slows, it causes the pressure to increase; this air is what powers the tools and appliances. Dynamic compressors don’t store air in a tank like most compressors. Instead, they provide a continuous flow of air and are highly efficient because of this.

Centrifugal compressors

Centrifugal compressors are often used in manufacturing plants to power gas turbines and move gasses around. It functions by using a rotating impeller to accelerate the air.

Axial compressors

Axial compressors are used mainly for engines in aeroplanes and ships. They are most commonly found in large industrial services and the air is pressurised by rotating blades.
